According to a new study published in the “Journal of the American Medical Association,” prevalence of obesity among adult men and women in the United States is 38.9% and varies depending on the level of urbanization.
Scientists from the National center for health statistics of the United States in Hyattsville, Maryland, have studied the prevalence of obesity in subgroups of people in the period from 2013 to 2016 and the trends associated with the level of urbanization in the period from 2001 to 2004 and from 2013 to 2016. The study included 10792 person.
The researchers found that 38.9% of adults in USA are obese, and in 7.6% developed severe obesity in the period from 2013 to 2016. There is increased prevalence of obesity in men living in medium or small Metropolitan statistical areas (mtrs), compared to those who live in large SSO (42.4 per cent against 31.8 per cent, respectively). In women, the prevalence of obesity was 47.2% and 38.1%, respectively.
“Age-adjusted prevalence of obesity and severe obesity in 2013-2016 varies depending on the level of urbanization,” concluded the study authors.
