The infamous Trofim Lysenko (1898 — 1976) rejected Mendelian genetics and chromosomal theory of heredity. His unscientific methods (“vernalization”, summer planting of potatoes, Gazovye planting) in Stalin’s time, have seriously hampered the development of Soviet agricultural science. Moreover, Lysenko and his supporters organized this persecution of the adherents of classical genetics, effectively destroying them, and science itself. But Lysenko was a knight of the eight orders of Lenin, three Stalin prizes.
