Petition against raising the retirement age, posted on the website Change.org gathered over one million signatures of Russians. As of 12:40 on 17 June, the appeal was signed by 1 million 366.
“We appeal to the President of the Russian Federation, the Government, Federal Meeting with the request not to allow raising the retirement age, to start a broad discussion with the participation of trade unions and other public associations of a set of economic measures that could raise the living standards of the population and solve the problem of filling the pension Fund without raising the retirement age,” the letter reads (spelling preserved).
On the website “Russian public initiative” a similar petition was signed by tens of thousands of people.
Two days earlier, the Federation of independent trade unions of Russia opposed the reforms and proposed to soften its provisions, raising the retirement age for women 8 and 5 years.
The first meeting of the State Duma Committee on labor, devoted to the draft law on pension reform, scheduled for Monday 18 June. The document envisages a gradual increase in the retirement age to 63 years for women and 65 years for men, starting in 2019, the government of the Russian Federation submitted to the lower house of Parliament on Saturday, June 16.
