According to a new review of research published in the journal “Pediatrics,” the use of drugs that reduce the acidity level in the stomach is associated with an increased risk of developing asthma in children.
Scientists from Zhejiang University in China conducted a systematic review of 8 studies that assessed the use of kislotoproduktsii drugs during pregnancy and risk of asthma in children.
The results of the study showed that the use of drugs that reduce acidity during pregnancy was associated with an increase of 1.45 times the risk of developing asthma in children in childhood. Among users of proton pump inhibitors the overall risk of developing asthma in children was higher by 1.34 times, and the users-receptor antagonist histamine-2 — 1.57 times.
“Evidence suggests that prenatal exposure of drugs of heartburn is associated with an increased risk of asthma in children,” concluded the study authors.
