Academy of Sciences of Yakutia presented a unique discovery — the remains are well preserved in the permafrost young cave lion, age from 20 to 50 thousand years.

The remains of a prehistoric animal found by a local resident in September of this year on the river Tirekhtyakh in Abyysky ulus of the Republic. The skin could be seen from the permafrost.

The beast had survived all extremities, on the skin there are no traces of external damage. Length of body from tip of nose to base of tail — 47 cm, weight — just over 4 pounds.

The age of the cub is about 1.5 — 2 months. The exact age and gender will be known after the imaging of dental and DNA research. The cause of death of lion scientists have not yet found. In the future experts hope to reconstruct the DNA of the lion and introduce it into the DNA of the modern lion.

This cave lion was third, found on the territory of the Republic. In September 2015 the Yakut archaeologists have unveiled the remains of two cubs, who still have even a mustache. Later it turned out that their age is about 55 thousand years.

Cave lions lived on the territory of modern Europe and Siberia 300-10 thousand years ago. It was one of the largest felines of all time. Adult individuals had a height of 1.2 m and 2.1 m length excluding the tail. This subspecies is now extinct.
