Coffee reduces the risk of pancreatitis

According to a study published in “Digestive Diseases and Sciences”, large coffee consumption may be associated with a decreased risk of developing pancreatitis.

The researchers analyzed data from 4 studies involving 351137 people. “A large consumption of coffee” was defined as drinking more than 3-4 cups a day.

The results of the study showed significantly reduced risk of pancreatitis in individuals who drank in day more than 3 cups of coffee (a decrease of 22%, the ratio of risk [OR] of 0.78). Coffee drinkers also had a lower risk of acute pancreatitis (a decrease of 20%, OR 0,80).

The authors argue that antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of caffeine may play a role in the protective effect of coffee on risk of pancreatitis. Since the consumption of coffee is associated with lower prevalence of diabetes and obesity, it can also indirectly reduce the risk of pancreatitis, as both of these conditions are considered risk factors for pancreatitis.
