According to researchers, chicken soup is the best cure for a cold in the winter.
A new study has shown that chicken soup may ease the symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections because it contains anti-inflammatory components. Aroma, spices and warm soup can clear the accumulation of mucus caused by colds.
Researcher Stephen Rennard of the University of Nebraska decided to check whether “grandma’s soup” can cure a cold. In “grandma’s soup” includes chicken, onions, sweet potatoes, parsnips, turnips, carrots, celery, parsley, salt and pepper.
Rennard researched whether chicken soup reduce the movement of neutrophils — the most common white blood cell that protects the body from infection.
It is assumed that the reduced activity of neutrophils, may reduce activity in the upper respiratory tract, which causes symptoms similar to the common cold.
The results of the study showed that chicken soup acts in this way. It has anti-inflammatory components that can help relieve symptoms of upper respiratory tract infection. However, this study was conducted only on leukocytes, but not in humans.
Dr. Rennard added that psychological and physical comfort while eating soup provides a placebo effect.
